Eligibility Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen

Must be a resident of Ward Seven in the District of Columbia
-
Must be currently enrolled as a senior or a graduate of a senior high school
in the District of Columbia (ages 17-24)

Must demonstrate need for financial assistance

Must be accepted at an accredited college, university, or other higher learning institution

Must enroll as a full-time student
-
Must maintain minimum C+ grade point average while in high school and college

Fellowship Details
​
Program Overview
The Internship Program is a collaborative project of the Lloyd D. Smith Foundation and the Marshall Heights Community Development Organization with Howard University.
​
The internship is an experiential leadership-training program designed to create solid pathways to success for the next generation of community leaders. It will provide a challenging and rewarding leadership development and work experience for exceptional students who are committed to higher standards of public and community service in DC neighborhoods. The intern will work with a dynamic team of community development leaders on a variety of projects that will provide the intern with exposure to the technical, social and political dimensions of economic and housing development, urban planning, community development, social services, education and career development in a rapidly changing urban environment. The intern will be afforded an opportunity to develop an extensive network of grassroot and grasstop contacts in Washington, D.C. The participant will gain first-hand knowledge and experience in developing responses and responding to the many socio-economic, affordable housing and educational challenges facing the residents of the Ward Seven community of the District of Columbia.

Application Requirements
The Internship Program is open to any Howard University undergraduate student who is a resident of the District of Columbia and has an interest in urban studies, urban economics, urban planning, community development or community building.
Individuals with the following academic and personal qualifications are encouraged to apply:

Duration of Internship
The duration of the internship is one year.
​
​
Stipend
The intern will receive a stipend between $12,000 and $15,000 per year and may
receive academic credit for selected internship courses upon approval of the relevant departmental director.
